Strategies

Activate your network:

Let people know you are job hunting and be specific about your ideal role, salary, and location. Unfortunately, networking is the best way to land a job!

Make a list of all your professional contacts:

  • Look through your LinkedIn - who do you feel comfortable reaching out to? Who has reached out to you for a favor before?

  • Look through your contacts in your personal and work emails - who have you connected with who might be of value to your search?

  • Remember to think through past jobs, people you’ve met at conferences/events, friends you have in a similar or adjacent field.

  • Think about people who can not only speak to your work but who could be a champion for you and your past experiences.

Reach out to folks and include the following:

  • What types of roles you are looking for (and maybe even what you’re not looking for).

  • If you’re open to consulting in the interim, note that and specify what services you can provide.

  • Share a copy of your resume or the services you offer.

  • Make a direct ask. This step is important! Most people want to help they just may not know how, or have the time to figure out how to help you.

Options of direct asks include:

  • Scheduling a catch up (recommend only doing this if you have specific questions to ask, don’t waste people’s time with a simple “can you help me”).

  • Ask them to send you job postings.

  • Ask them to connect you with 1-2 people who might be able to help in your job search.

  • Re-post something you may have posted on linkedin (include a link to your post).

  • Ask them to review and offer feedback on your application materials.

  • Ask what their favorite job boards, or newsletters are.

Apply boldly:

Applying doesn’t mean accepting. Don’t overthink it and just go for it! It’s important to NOT only apply for “dream jobs”. Interviewing is a performance, and one that requires practice - make sure to work out the kinks on jobs you may not be as excited about so you’re prepared for the big ones.

As you apply to jobs, look through your LinkedIn connections to see if you know anyone at the organizations you are applying to, or if you know anyone who is connected to folks who work there. You can ask to be connected to learn more about the role/org, or simply ask for someone to put in a good word. This is usually a good strategy for landing at least an initial interview.

Building your resume

Tailor your resume and cover letters and lead with impact:

Customize your resume and cover letter for each role by emphasizing relevant experience and using keywords from the job description. Use strong action verbs and quantify your achievements to show the value you bring.

Keep it clean and concise:

Stick to a one or two page resume. Use clear headings, consistent formatting, and avoid dense paragraphs.

Include relevant skills and tools:

List your certifications and awards, as well as software, systems, and tools you are proficient in, especially those commonly used in your field.

job boards

We’ve curated a list of job boards that reflect our organizational values around equity, transparency, and fair compensation. The roles shared through these platforms list salary and benefits upfront, offer compensation aligned with responsibilities, and meet or exceed living wage standards. See the list here.

Interview Tips

Do your homework:

Research the organization’s mission, values, and the role itself so you can speak to how your experience aligns and ask thoughtful questions.

Practice with purpose:

Prepare clear, concise responses to common questions and use real examples that highlight your skills, impact, and authenticity.

Interview the organization:

Be prepared to ask questions to ensure the organization can live up to your personal and professional values. Be sure to ask about things like turnover, culture, challenges the organization is currently facing, etc. Interviews go both ways!

Follow up professionally:

Send a thank you email within 24 hours to express appreciation, reinforce your interest, and reflect on a key takeaway from the interview.
