Supporting a Non-Profit Spin Out from Fiscal Sponsorship to New Independent Entity

Formerly known as Vermont Releaf Collective, Liberation Ecosystem cultivates connection, shares resources, and amplifies the voices of people of color in Vermont within their focus areas of Land, Environment, Agriculture, and Foodways. They are a collaborative ecosystem for growing power and community for members.

We helped Liberation Ecosystem spin out from their fiscal sponsor into their own independent entity.

Why Liberation Ecosystem decided to collaborate with The Ops Collective
Recognizing the complexity and workload of spinning out, Liberation Ecosystem turned to the Ops Collective to lead them through a strategic, streamlined process ensuring clarity, momentum, and long-term operational success.

The Ops Collective helped Liberation Ecosystem by:

  • Conducting an operational needs and status assessment meeting with Liberation Ecosystem leadership, fiscal sponsor team, and other stakeholders

  • Reviewing files to document all existing policies, procedures, and documents, as well as identifying gaps in compliance, policies, and other organizational documents

  • Developing a spin out plan that detailed all of the necessary steps to complete the spin out process of transitioning from being fiscally sponsored to setting up and managing their own independent entity

  • Recruiting and onboarding their Director of Operations

  • Supporting the management of the overall spin process to ensure all the necessary tasks were completed, and completed on time

  • Completing discrete tasks as part of the spin out which included identifying a professional employer organization (PEO) to manage all of their HR needs, hiring an operations manager, identifying an accounting partner, among other things.

Outcomes of our work together - helped firm up their team and set up their new entity for operational success.

  • Helped set up operations under a newly established independent 501c3, after years of working with a fiscal sponsor.

  • Turned an overwhelming workload not only manageable, but through creative problem solving and creating streamlined processes, we helped make the work enjoyable.

  • Supported all aspects of the spin from setting up benefits for their employees, identifying their new Professional Employer Organization (PEO), created HR and internal processes and policies, established accounting and finance systems, hired a new operations team member, worked with contractors, among other things.

  • Facilitated a nearly seamless transition for their staff during this phase and ensured they had the right operations infrastructure in place so their team can continue their programmatic work.
